Within the Project “Topological order of electrons in solids: New materials, Phenomena & application Concepts (UKRATOP)” which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and which aims at establishing an Ukrainian-German Excellence Center for Topological Matter, we invite applications for several scholarships available for young Ukrainian researchers (MSc students and PostDocs) to support joint research of Kyiv Academic University (KAU) and IFW Dresden/TU Dresden. The scholarships are offered to:

  • MSc students (6-month stays at IFW Dresden): ca. 930 Euro/month + university enrolment fee at TU Dresden + health insurance,
  • PostDocs (18-month stays at IFW Dresden): 2,500 Euro/month,

in one of three specializations: materials, experiment, or theory.

The idea of these scholarships is to stimulate joint research between Ukrainian and German scientists represented in this project by KAU and IFW Dresden, respectively. The MSc students are expected to defend their degrees in Ukraine. Their Master’s Thesis will be supervised in collaboration by Ukrainian and German scientific supervisors of each student.

The research topics are related to topological ordering of electrons in solids, and cover new materials, phenomena and applications. The scientific goal of this project is to grow highquality new materials both in the form of crystals and heterostructures and to determine their topological electronic and magnetic properties. The successful candidates, depending on specialization (materials, experiment, or theory), will join corresponding research groups at IFW Dresden:

Experiment: https://www.ifw-dresden.de/institutes/iff/
Materials: https://www.ifw-dresden.de/ifw-institutes/iff/synthesis-and-crystal-growth/
Theory: https://www.ifw-dresden.de/institutes/itf/

More details about the Project and each specialization can be found here: https://ukratop.ifw-dresden.de

To apply, send a copy of your CV and cover letter indicating your interest in the project and why you wish to undertake it to Prof. Alexander Kordyuk (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., +380 95 0104594). The CV should include information about prior education, previous research which you have performed, the list of your publications (if any), and the names and contact addresses of two referees. The applications of master students should be submitted before June 28, 2020. The scholarships should be available from 1 October, 2020.

There is no deadline for the submission of PostDoc applications and scholarships are available at any time.

All applications should be submitted in English.

Please note: You will be informed by June 29th, 2019 if you are invited to join the UKRATOP online selection workshop on July 2nd, 2020. A ten-minute talk in English is expected from each invited candidate.
The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden - in short IFW Dresden – is a non-university research institute and a member of the Leibniz Association. It is concerned with modern materials science and combines explorative research in physics, chemistry and materials science with technological development of new materials and products. The IFW employs about 600 people and besides enhancing fundamental and applied research development one focus is on the training of young scientists. cert4iraThe first six master students who have recently finished their 6 months scholarships at the IFW Dresden have been distinguished with the UKRATOP certificates during the Applied Physics Student School 2019 in Kyiv on April 24. We wish them successful scientific career to fully utilize the obtained experience!

Meanwhile, there is still one day left to apply for the UKRATOP scholarships within the next call, the deadline for which is extended to May 18.
