Kyiv Academic University (KAU) and IFW Dresden/TU Dresden, within the bi-lateral collaboration funded by the UKRATOP Project, invites applications for scholarships available for young Ukrainian researchers (MSc students, PhD students, and PostDocs) to support joint research. The UKRATOP Project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and aims in establishing the Ukrainian-German Excellence Center for Topological Matter. The scholarships are offered for:

MSc students (3 student assistants for 6 months each): 600 Euro/month + support for accommodation,
PhD students (3 scholarships for 2 years each): 1,250 Euro/month,
PostDocs (2 scholarships for 18 months each): 2,500 Euro/month,

in one of three specializations: materials, experiment, or theory.

The idea of these scholarships is to stimulate the joint research between Ukrainian and German scientists represented in this project by KAU and IFW Dresden, respectively. The MSc and PhD students are expected to defend their degrees in Ukraine that requires the established collaboration between Ukrainian and German scientific supervisors of each student.

The research topics are related with topological ordering of electrons in solids, and cover new materials, phenomena and applications. The scientific goal of this project is to grow high-quality new materials both in the form of crystals and as well-characterized heterostructures and to determine their topological electronic and magnetic properties. The successful candidates, depending on specialization (materials, experiment, or theory), will join the research groups at IFW Dresden. For further information on research topics see

Theory: https://www.ifw-dresden.de/institutes/itf/

More details about the Project and each specialization can be found here: https://ukratop.ifw-dresden.de

To apply, send a copy of your CV and cover letter indicating your interest in the project and why you wish to undertake it to Prof. Alexander Kordyuk (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., +380 95 0104594). The CV should include information about prior education, previous research which you have performed, the list of your publications (if any), and the names and contact addresses of two referees. The applications should be submitted in English before May 14, 2018.

Please note: You will be informed by May 23, 2018 if you are invited to join the UKRATOP selection workshop on May 30, 2018 at KAU. A ten-minute talk in English is expected from each invited PhD and PostDoc candidate.

The scholarships should be available from 1 October, 2018.

The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden - in short IFW Dresden – is a non-university research institute and a member of the Leibniz Association. It is concerned with modern materials science and combines explorative research in physics, chemistry and materials science with technological development of new materials and products. The IFW employs about 600 people and besides enhancing fundamental and applied research development one focus is on the training of young scientists. Further information at: http://www.ifw-dresden.de.

The IFW would like to increase the proportion of women in science. Qualified women are therefore explicitly invited to apply.

Severely disabled applicants are given preferential treatment if they have the same qualifications.
