History of KAU begins with the Kyiv branch of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (KB MIPT), created by Borys Yevhenovych Paton to provide Ukrainian students, studying at MIPT, with a possibility to return and work in Ukraine. As an example was taken the "basic" department of MIPT at the Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which began working in 1967 under the guidance of Academician Viktor Mykhailovych Glushkov. The KB MIPT was headed by Academician Platon Grygorovych Kostiouk, and his deputy was Valentyn Tykhonovych Cherepin.
In 1978, the first target enrollment in the KB MIPT for the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR was 47 students out of 236 entrants. The 1st and the 4th years students of the KB MIPT studied at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Dolgoprudny city), and the 5th and 6th years students - at the basic institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
In November, 1985, the Ukrainian Extramural School of Physics and Technology (UESPT) was opened at the KB MIPT, which for many years coordinated the work of the Extramural School of Physics and Technology of MIPT in Ukraine.
