KYIV ACADEMIC UNIVERSITY
The State Scientific Institution «Kyiv Academic University» (KAU) is a research-intensive university of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. It has been created through the reorganization of the Physics and Engineering Education and Research Center of the NAS of Ukraine as a successor to the Kyiv branch of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (KB MIPT, since 1978).
Mission of KAU
The core mission of KAU is to address urgent societal challenges to revive Ukrainian science and technology, and the main idea of KAU is to combine the research-intensive education system with integration to the European Research Area.
The research-intensive education implies a combination of a top level fundamental education with the earliest involvement of students into world-level research and innovation activities. At KAU we teach talented Ukrainian students from all over the country at the highest level and encourage them to build a personal trajectory to early scientific careers by involving in this process the most active and internationally recognized research group leaders working in the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The main principle of KAU is studying through research, which is implemented by:
- careful selection of talented and creative students;
- individual approach to each student;
- early involvement of students in world-class research;
- involvement in the studying process of leading scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the potential of the best academic laboratories;
- support for innovation and dual education;
- maximum integration into the international research area.
The main activities of KAU
- Scientific activity - conducting research in the most relevant areas of modern science with maximum involvement of students;
- Educational and scientific activity - studying of students by leading scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with extensive experience of international cooperation;
- Innovation activity;
- Development of scientific education and popularization of science.
Role of international cooperation
The transformation of the “brain drain” into the “brain circulation” is one of the most important challenges for KAU. Our response to this challenge is a personal approach to each student that consists of step-by-step building of their scientific careers with strong emphasis on the development of a sustainable scientific collaboration with European Research Centers.
Structure of KAU
The research-intensive education of KAU is implemented by such units as Minor Academic University (MAU) that operates in collaboration with the Minor Academy of Sciences and top secondary schools (lyceums) in physics and mathematics, Center for Coordination of Undergraduate Education, which coordinates work with KAU undergraduate students at relevant departments of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and a number of KAU Departments. Also the structure of KAU includes the Innovation Center and the Center of International Integration (responsible for integration of KAU in the international scientific area).
Main peculiarity of the University is a close connection of the educational process at the Departments with real scientific research conducted at the basic academic institutions and KAU Research Centers, where interdisciplinary study of the most relevant areas of modern science is taking place. Currently, the main focus is made on develompent of two interdisciplinary Research Centers: Data Science Research Center and the Center for Quantum Materials and Quantum Technologies.
Within the UKRATOP project, we invite applications for several scholarships available for young Ukrainian researchers (MSc students and PostDocs) to support joint research of KAU and IFW Dresden/TU Dresden. The scholarships are offered in one of three specializations (materials, experiment, or theory) to:
- 5 MSc students (6-month stays at IFW Dresden): ca. 940 Euro/month + enrolment and health insurance,
- 1 PostDoc (12-month stays at IFW Dresden): 2,500 Euro/month.
The applications of master students should be submitted before April 29, 2021. The scholarships start from October 1, 2021. For details see http://kau.org.ua/centers/ukratop
September 10, 2019: A long-awaited event - the presentation of the first KAU diplomas has been combined with the dedication of first-year master students.
Congratulations to our first KAU graduates! We wish them continued success! And we wish new students that their life at KAU to be even more interesting and useful for their future scientific careers!
