KYIV ACADEMIC UNIVERSITY
Kyiv Academic University (KAU) is a new Ukrainian research-intensive university with rich prehistory. It is being created under the auspices of both the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine by means of reforming the Kyiv branch of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (KB MIPT) to meet new challenges.
Mission of KAU
The core mission of KAU is to address pressing societal challenges for revival of Ukrainian science and technology, and the main idea behind KAU is a combination of the research-intensive education system (known in former Soviet Union as "phys-tech system" represented by MIPT) with natural integration to European research area.
The research-intensive education implies combination of a top level fundamental education with the earliest involvement of students into world-level research and innovation activities. This requires a system where the most talented Ukrainian students are gathered over the whole country, taught math and physics to the highest level, and further encouraged to build a personal education trajectory to early scientific carrier by connecting them to the most active and internationally recognized research group leaders working in the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Role of international co-operation
Transformation of the 'brain drain' into 'brain circulation' is one of the important challenges for KAU. It requires personal approach to students and giving them clear understanding of scientific career opportunities combined with well established long-term scientific collaborations with European research centers.
Structure of KAU
The research-intensive education of KAU is consistently implemented by such units as Minor Academic University (MAU) that operates in collaboration with the Minor Academy of Sciences and top secondary schools (lyceums) in physics and mathematics, Center for Coordination of Undergraduate Education that coordinates work with KAU undergraduate students at relevant departments of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, and a number of KAU Departments (research-educational units called "Cathedras" at basic academic institutes and interdisciplinary Research Centers). Also there are Center of Innovations and Center of International Integration (responsible for integration of KAU in the international scientific area).
Main peculiarity of KAU is in close conjunction of the educational process Cathedras with real scientific research in base academic institutions and in KAU Research Centers, where interdisciplinary study of the most relevant areas of modern science take place. Currently the main focus is made on develompent of two interdisciplinary Research Centers: Data Science Research Center and the Center for Quantum Technologies.
The first six master students who have recently finished their 6 months scholarships at the IFW Dresden have been distinguished with the UKRATOP certificates during the Applied Physics Student School 2019 in Kyiv on April 24. We wish them successful scientific career to fully utilize the obtained experience!
Meanwhile, there is still one day left to apply for the UKRATOP scholarships within the next call, the deadline for which is extended to May 18.
