      SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre in Krakow, together with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, are organizing an online event: Light for Ukraine – synchrotron workshop at SOLARIS which will be held on 23-24th February 2023. The Workshop aims to establish scientific collaboration, exchange concepts of future developments, and discuss research areas that can be supported and reinforced within LEAPS-Ukraine cooperation.       On November 21, 2023, the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources (LEAPS) was hosted at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This exclusive high-level event was attended by members of the LEAPS General Assembly, Coordination Board, and Working Groups, along with a select group of distinguished guests representing key stakeholders of LEAPS. Alexander Kordyuk presented the National Academy of Ukraine, Kyiv Academic University, and the newly established Ukrainian Association of Synchrotron Users. All LEAPS members expressed strong solidarity with Ukraine and their commitment to supporting Ukrainian researchers in accelerator-based research. Specifically, the project for the Ukrainian beamline at the SOLARIS synchrotron was endorsed, and the Light for Ukraine synchrotron workshop at SOLARIS, along with Ukraine's admission to the European Synchrotron and Free Electron Laser User Organisation (ESUO) were announced.

      From the Special Issue on "Ukrainian Neuroscience"

      Congratulations to Tetyana Pivneva and Nana Voitenko, the professors of the Department of Biomedicine and Neurosciences, on the publication of their new paper "Mitochondrial malfunction mediates impaired cholinergic Ca2+ signalling and submandibular salivary gland dysfunction in diabetes" in Neuropharmacology.  Their findings provide insights into the potential targeting of malfunctioning mitochondria for the treatment of diabetic xerostomia as an alternative strategy to the existing pharmacotherapeutic approaches. This article is part of the Special Issue on "Ukrainian Neuroscience".       Physics research program of IRIS-HEP, a software institute headquartered at Princeton University, supports Ukrainian students, as described in the new article on the PU site. IRIS-HEP develops innovative software upgrades for experiments at CERN and is funded by the National Science Foundation. To fund the program for Ukrainian students, IRIS-HEP has got a grant from the Simons Foundation that supports a few Ukrainian students displaced by the war, as well as internships for twenty other remote students who remained in Ukraine doing research with the IRIS-HEP software institute. Artem Havryliuk, IRIS-HEP fellow and graduate student at KAU Department of Applied Physics and Nanomaterials, said a couple of words for this article.

      After the extremely successful Quantum Machine Learning Summer School, organized by our students, several of our young scientists and students took part in a very interesting similar event, the Lviv Data Science Summer School organized by the Simons Foundation, the US National Academy of Sciences and the Ukrainian Catholic University. In the interview for the US National Academy of Sciences digest, Volodymyr Bezguba, senior research fellow at the Superconducting Quantum Electronics Lab at KAU, said: “Experiences like this school are especially valuable in current times, for people in Ukraine to not lose hope and not succumb to despair, ... We need support from the world, including in science — so that we don’t lose our scientific potential and have a bright future after we win the war.”

2nd Light for Ukraine Workshop at SOLARIS

On January 23, the 2nd Light for Ukraine Workshop "Towards Nano and Micro X-ray Spectroscopy Applications” held at the SOLARIS synchrotron was successfully completed.
The workshop focused on the concept of the planned Ukrainian synchrotron beamline at SOLARIS and gathered input from beamline scientists from other synchrotron facilities regarding research opportunities and scientific goals in nano and micro X-ray spectroscopy. Additionally, Ukrainian researchers presented on areas of scientific interest. Recordings of all presentations are available on YouTube.
